While Avengers: Endgame saw Black Widow leading the Avengers following the 5-year time jump after Thanos’ Snap, an early version of the script had her instead “leading the organization in D.C. that was in charge of orphans.”
Via TheWrap, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo appeared on the Slate podcast “The Gist” and discussed how an early draft tried to deal with the “idea that one-quarter of all children have no parents.”
“One thing that we talked about a lot–and I thought was really profound, but it was almost too large of an idea for us to wrangle, but we did try for a while–is just the idea that one-quarter of all children have no parents,” director Anthony Russo said.
“Assuming you started with two parents. So that’s a lot of global orphans. Just the staggering number of that. I believe at one point really early in development, Black Widow was actually leading the organization in D.C. that was in charge of orphans, basically. That was what she was heading up five years later. But yes, it’s fascinating when you start running it down,” Joe added.
While that scenario didn’t play out for one reason or another, an equally sad scene played out when we lost Black Widow while her and Hawkeye were attempting to recover the Soul Stone.
Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discussed the decision to have Black Widow fall and how “her journey, in [their] minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back.”
While her death was shocking, it also brings up the question as to what her upcoming solo film will be about. Reports are that it will be a prequel set after the first Avengers film and, who knows, we may even learn about what happened in Budapest.
