There is a ridiculous number of cool details to break down from the newest Monster Hunter World: Iceborne story trailer, but there were a few moments that especially stood out. Here are seven of the most important new details we noticed from the newest Monster Hunter World: Iceborne story trailer, including Tigrex gameplay, a Glavenus tease, and much more.
Watch the full trailer below!
1. Monster Hunter Generations’ Glavenus is Teased
At the end of the story trailer, a hunter confronts a Rathian. Behind the hunter, you can just make out the feet of another monster in the back right corner. The screen cuts to black before we can get a clear shot, but the subsequent roar and fiery sword slice can only belong to Glavenus.
The brute wyvern was originally introduced in Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS. It’s huge, resembles a spikey T-Rex, and wields a heated blade-like tail. It sharpens its tail in its mouth, and one of its most powerful attacks is telegraphed by that very action. Fun fact, its tail can only be severed while it’s heated to the point of glowing. Otherwise, it’s hard as steel! We speculated more in-depth about Glavenus, and what his, Nargacuga, and Tigrex’s appearances could mean here.
2. Monster Hunter World Tigrex Gameplay Revealed
Tigrex was teased in the last Iceborne trailer that premiered as part of Sony’s State of Play, and this new story trailer showed it in action. The flagship monster for Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Tigrex is categorized as a powerful flying wyvern, but it prefers to strike on the ground. Check out that long-range leap, and fast, unpredictable charges. It has another move where it sends projectiles in front of it, which can cause ailments depending on the terrain they’re made out of. For example, it will cause Iceblight when performed on an icy terrain. Tigrex’s roar is also one of the only ones that stuns and causes damage. Better get those ear plugs ready!
We hoped and assumed Tigrex would be included in the Iceborne expansion because it originally appeared in the icy Snowy Mountain habitat in Freedom 2, but oddly enough, it seems to be fighting in the Rotten Vale in this clip. This is even more evident by its turf war against the Rotten Vale native Odogaron, and against the Radobaan later in the trailer. We have seen some screenshots in the wild of Tigrex fighting in snowy terrain, however.

3. Shrieking Legiana in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
If this Legiana in the about 55 seconds in looked a little different to you, that’s because it is. Capcom confirmed this is a new “extreme variant” called the Shrieking Legiana. Its covered in frost which it uses to freeze its prey before swooping down to strike. This probably means we’ll be getting extreme variants of other Monster Hunter World monsters as well!
4. Monster Hunter World Velkhana Gameplay
Velkhana was the new Elder Dragon revealed in the State of Play trailer, but we only got cinematic glimpses of it before. The pickings are still slim, but at least we get a look at its gameplay in this trailer 1:15 in. A few things are certain. We can fight it in both Elder’s Recess and the new locale, it shoots ice breath, and it seems to be able to control the ice around it.
5. Raider Ride Lets You Ride Small Monster Tailraiders in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Right around the 2:29 mark of the trailer, we get two glimpses at hunters riding Jagras! First off, heck yeah. Second, while it’s not explained in the trailer, the official Monster Hunter site has been updated with details on how the Raider Ride will work.
You’ll be able to ride small monsters tailraiders, presumably the same ones that your Palico can ride which would be the Jagras, Shamos, Girros, and Kestodon (though I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a new addition in Iceborne’s new area, or if the clunkier Kestodon ends up not making the cut).
The catch here is that you can’t directly control the monster you ride. You can gather, use items or your slinger, and even look at your map, but the monster will either automatically take you to a pin you place on the map or try to find tracks and chase down a specified monster. That will give you a chance to prep and use items while simultaneously getting chauffeured to the fight. Neat!
6. Iceborne’s New Camp: Seliana
About 15 seconds in, we get a first look at a new settlement in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. This new base camp is called Seliana, and it will serve as home in the Hoarfrost Reach. Hunters are equipped with cozy coats to protect them from the elements, and the native, herbivorous Popo are utilized to pull carts. The official Iceborne website has been updated with more details, some of which we can see. At 27 seconds in, we catch a glimpse of a brand new facility called The Steamworks, which is used to power the other facilities at Seliana. Use fuel (points), earned during hunts, to play a mini-game here to earn items! Then, we see a new felyne prepare food – her name is the Grammeowster Chef, and the adorable cook was once the Meowscular Chef’s mentor.
Lastly, we know Seliana’s layout will be more convenient than ever to traverse, and allows easier access to once out-of-the-way points like the Housekeeper and Palico equipment.
6. The Story of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
We know Iceborne begins with the odd appearance of Legiana in the Ancient Forest. It looks like the Legiana didn’t leave before accosting an unsuspecting Anjanath, though. They left a frozen one behind, which we see in the capture bay in the trailer. At the very beginning of this story trailer, we see the handler riding the Third Fleet’s airship across the sea in pursuit of the migrating Legiana. This is how our heroes find the new locale. The handler also has her hands on an odd scale, which seems to be the focal point of a larger mystery, perhaps disconnected from the Legiana migration? Wait, is that a Glavenus scale…?
Those are the biggest details we noticed from the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne story trailer, and we didn’t even touch upon all the new master rank armor sets and weapons we saw!
